Activities week Years 8 and 9 2017!
Throughout the last week, we’ve been doing a number of different activities with pupils in years 8 and 9.
The rain on Monday didn’t dampen the spirits of pupils, and I’d like to thank them for being so enthusiastic throughout the week! On Monday pupils were given experiences in; surfing, photography (winners to be announced in the last week!), mountain biking and gardening. Thank you to all agencies and to Elen Chick and CAMHS for their PSHE session about resilience.
I would like to thank the number of different agencies who have volunteered to help in YBH! On Tuesday morning, there was a very successful morning with volunteers from the ‘Inspiring the Future’ charity, who gave pupils the opportunity to learn about apprenticeships and different career paths. Later in the day, year 8 received sessions from Crucial Crew with Meic Cymru, CAIS, Scottish Power, Hafan Cymru, Calan, Powys Road Safety, the Food Standards Agency and Welsh Hearts. In addition to this, year 9 took part in a Geography field trip to study a river.
On Wednesday, the sun came out! Year 9 went on a walk, whilst year 8 received CPR training with Elen Chick. Even though the archery competition was cancelled, a ‘Fun festival’ was organised – where pupils had an alternative sports day in teams. During the day, pupils received drumming sessions from Stefan Jones, art, computer programming, hair and beauty with Alis Fleming, a pupil who has gone on to open her own business in this field!
Next, on Thursday, pupils had a morning of 5x60 activities organised by Mr G Jones and Miss Fleming. The highlight of the morning was when Tom Jones caught Miss Fleming out in the rounders! Pupils played softball, rounders, football and tennis. In the afternoon, pupils had the chance to buy products in the year 10 Enterprise sale.
At the end of a successful week, year 9 went to the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth with the Welsh and English departments. Throughout the day, pupils took part in a number of activities; board games and chess, bingo with the elderly and baking. Lastly, Aberystwyth University came to the school to deliver sessions about space and robotics!
I really do hope that it was an enjoyable experience for all!
