Dear Parents / Carers

It is a pleasure to present you with the school handbook.  Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions a parent / carer will have to make.  Parents want a good education for their children, but they also want their child to feel safe and secure and, above all else, happy.  At Ysgol Bro Hyddgen we believe that we can offer all of these.

This school is a welcoming, happy community where pupils are expected to work hard and behave well.  We welcome and understand the different strengths of all our pupils.  Since we are a small school we can cater for each pupil’s needs and care for the individual pupil.  Our numbers are increasing but we are still small enough to be able to provide high quality care and opportunities to all our pupils.

We take particular pride in the attainment of our GCSE results this year, with 98% of pupils achieving at least 5 GCSE or an equivalent qualification. I can assure you the staff at the school will go out of their way to provide high quality lessons.  We are also proud of our musical achievements and our successes at the Urdd Eisteddfod, on the playing field and in the numerous opportunities and clubs that are open to all. We have a very popular Sixth Form and we again take pride in their achievements with 69.2% gaining A* - C grades in their A level examinations; with 51.6% of those A* - B grades.

A close relationship between home and school is important and parents are welcome to contact the school at any time.  We update parents on the progress of their children every term.  We care for our pupils and we believe that their time at school should be rewarding and fulfilling.  Should you choose to send your child to Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, My staff and I are confident that you will have made the right decision.  I look forward to meeting you soon, and if you have any queries or concerns please contact me at the school at any time.

Yours sincerely

Key Stage 3: Years 7, 8 & 9

The school offers a curriculum which creates a balance between the 11 curricular areas referred to in the National Curriculum and cross curricular elements such as Personal and Social Education and IT. Particular focus is placed on developing and improving the pupils’ literacy and numeracy skills.  At Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, we have been innovative in adapting  the curriculum to meet with the National Literacy & Numeracy Framework requirements and we are proud to be seen to be leading the way in mid Wales in this field. Our intention in every aspect of our work is to equip the pupils with the required skills to enable them to realize their dreams in the 21st century.

Welcome Year 7!

Here are some quotes we have had from our new Year 7 on their first few weeks at the secondary campus.

I really enjoy the secondary school because all the teachers are very nice and I have a lot of friends. What I don’t like about the school is that it is very big and you have to move around each lesson. After about a month in the school I had the opportunity to go to Oakwood and I am very lucky to have had  that chance.

The secondary school is good fun and exciting! Everyone said that the teachers are nasty and the work is hard, but that is not the case. The teachers are all very kind and if you listen to them they will listen to you. Starting a new school or secondary school is very exiting.
In my first week I was not sure about meeting the head teacher at all or the other teachers to be honest, but everything was fine. The work is very challenging but manageable. I was not sure about homework as I do a lot of swimming and I don’t have much spare time but by doing a little bit every night I am fine.
Getting up in the morning is hard, but I am enjoying myself.

I am feeling very nervous while waiting for the bus, I have never had to wait for the school bus before.
I sat on the bus with Morgan, she was starting year seven also.
We all went to the hall and I met my other friends from Ysgol Glantwymyn. It was very hard to remember where the lessons would be held , but by the end of the week I knew my way around.
By now I have made many new friends.
